Activate a device the right way (phones, tablets, hotspots — SIM or eSIM)
Big misconception: Wi-Fi is NOT required to activate a SIM device (like a hotspot or a phone with a physical SIM). Wi-Fi is mainly needed to download/install an eSIM (common on iPhones).
Need upgrades, new lines, or more devices shipped?
That’s the work I take on. I’ll confirm eligibility and place the order for your business account. Activation steps are below if you already have the device.
Devices are shipped (no pickup). Fastest path: tell me upgrade vs new line + which device you want.
What you need (takes 30 seconds)
- The wireless number you’re activating (the new line or upgraded line).
- Billing ZIP or shipping ZIP on the account.
- The device powered on and ready (and if it uses a physical SIM, make sure it’s seated).
Fastest activation method (works for phones, tablets, and hotspots)
- Go to att.com/activations/activatewireless
- Enter the wireless number + billing or shipping ZIP
- Follow the prompts until you see confirmation
- Power-cycle the device once (off/on) and test service
Call 866-895-1099 and follow the prompts.
If you’re activating multiple lines on the same account, the activation flow may show other numbers available to activate. Make sure you pick the correct line.
Wi-Fi: what it’s actually for (and what it’s NOT for)
Reality: A SIM device (hotspot, tablet with SIM, many Android phones) can activate and connect to AT&T using the cellular network once carrier-side activation is completed.
- Installing an eSIM (especially on iPhones)
- Device setup steps that download updates
Device-specific steps (pick your device type)
No Wi-Fi needed to activate. A hotspot provides Wi-Fi to other devices — it doesn’t join Wi-Fi to activate.
- Power on the hotspot and wait 2–5 minutes.
- Activate the line using att.com/activations/activatewireless (or 866-895-1099).
- After activation, power-cycle the hotspot once.
- Confirm it shows signal (bars/5G/LTE) and not “No Service.”
- Then connect your laptop/phone to the hotspot’s Wi-Fi (SSID/password on the device label or screen).
If it still shows “No Service,” reseat the SIM (if accessible), reboot, and retry activation with the correct ZIP.
Wi-Fi not required. Once the carrier-side activation is complete, the phone should register on the cellular network.
- Make sure the SIM is inserted (or already in the phone from shipment).
- Activate online (or call 866-895-1099).
- Restart the phone.
- Test: call + text + data.
If it’s a number port, routing can take time even after activation shows complete.
Wi-Fi is usually required to download/install the eSIM after activation.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Activate the line online (or call 866-895-1099).
- Watch for: “Cellular Plan Ready to be Installed” → tap to install.
- Test: call + text + data. Don’t wipe the old phone until all services work.
If you don’t see the prompt: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Carrier Activation (wording varies).
The activation method is the same: wireless number + billing/shipping ZIP.
- Activate online (or call 866-895-1099).
- Restart the device once.
- Confirm it shows active service and can connect.
For eSIM-capable devices, Wi-Fi may be needed to download the eSIM profile.
If the activation page shows “Not Activated”
- Double-check the wireless number (wrong line is the #1 mistake).
- Try both the billing ZIP and the shipping ZIP.
- Wait 5 minutes, then power-cycle the device.
- If it’s a phone with a SIM: reseat the SIM and reboot.
Example note I sent a client after seeing “not activated” in their screenshot:
Hello Stephen, in the screenshot you provided below it shows the new device was not activated. In the shipping material it has the activation procedures. Use att.com/activations/activatewireless. It asks for the number and billing or shipping zip code.
