AT&T Mobility

AT&T Mobility

You may need to unlock your phone or tablet before it will work on another carrier’s network. Devices purchased from AT&T may be programmed with an IMEI lock that prevents it from operating with other compatible wireless services.
To unlock your wireless device you must meet eligibility requirements.
Important Note
Not all tablets are delivered to you locked. Some tablets are shipped unlocked. Review your device information package to determine if you need to request an unlock code to use your device on another network.

General Eligibility Requirements for unlocking all AT&T wireless devices
AT&T will unlock a device under the following circumstances:

  1. The person requesting the unlock code must be one of the following:
  2. A current AT&T customer
  3. A former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account
  4. The AT&T Mobile Device was designed for use on the AT&T wireless network.
  5. The AT&T Mobile Device has been paid for in full.
  6. The AT&T Mobile Device has not been reported lost or stolen.

You’re allowed the following number of device unlocks:
Current customers are allowed up to five device unlocks per account, per year.
Former customers are allowed a total of five device unlocks per former account.
Additional eligibility requirements to unlock AT&T devices

In addition to the general eligibility requirements, you may need to meet additional requirements based on your Service Commitment (also known as your contract), whether you’re a postpaid or prepaid customer, or if you’re requesting a device unlock due to military deployment.

Request your device unlock
To unlock your phone or tablet to work on another wireless carrier’s network, you must request a device unlock code or instructions from AT&T:

  • Visit att.com/deviceunlock from a tablet or PC to submit your Customer Device Unlock Request.
  • Review the eligibility requirements to unlock your device.
  • At the bottom of the page, select the checkbox and then select Agree to agree to the requirements to unlock your device.
  • Complete the Request a Device Unlock form and select Submit:

AT&T will process your unlock request within 2-5 business days.
To check the status of your request, visit att.com/deviceunlockstatus from a tablet or PC.
If your request is approved, we’ll send the unlock code and/or instructions to unlock your device to the email address entered in your unlock request.
Important Note
If you’re a business customer, call 800.331.0500 to request an unlock code for your business device.

Unlock a phone or tablet with a Service Commitment (postpaid)

  • Your account must be in good standing (i.e., it has no past due amount or unpaid balance owed AT&T).
  • You’ve satisfied all contract obligations, including any Service Commitment associated with the device to be unlocked, in one of the following ways:

Unlock a device due to military deployment
AT&T will unlock any AT&T wireless device for an active and deployed member of the military who meets the following requirements:
You must be a current AT&T customer.
Your account must be in good standing (i.e., it has no past due amount or unpaid balance owed AT&T).
You must provide AT&T with deployment verification. Please see cancel your wireless service due to military deployment for instructions on providing deployment verification.
